UN makes open call for ideas on fighting climate change
By Megan Darby  Published on 30/01/2018, 4:52pm
Researchers, campaigners, business leaders and members of the public have an unprecedented chance to influence UN climate talks in 2018.
SIGN THE  EXECUTIVE SUMMARY  AND WE GIVE  YOU A  FREE  SCORPION  BOWL !
REFUSE, AND  WE  TAKE  YOU  FOR  A  FIREWALK.
The plans are led by Fiji, which holds the rotating presidency... They draw on Pacific “talanoa” storytelling traditions in a bid to make the process more inclusive.
Talanoa is a traditional word used in Fiji and across the Pacific to reflect a process of inclusive, participatory and transparent dialogue... by creating a safe space that embraces mutual respect for a platform for decision making for a greater good.”...
There are to be three working groups to address the questions:
  • Where are we?
  • Where do we want to go?
  • How do we get there?
At UN climate talks in Bonn in November, one negotiator told Climate Home News:
“In here, we are becoming detached from the real world.”

By attending the State of the Union with NASA administrator nominee Jim Bridenstine, the Science Guy tacitly endorses climate denial, intolerance and attacks on science

Tonight, Bill Nye “The Science Guy” will accompany… Trump’s nominee for NASA Administrator, to the State of the Union address… a controversial nominee who refuses to state that climate change is driven by human activity, and… worked to undermine civil rights, including pushing for crackdowns on immigrants, ban on gay marriage, and abolishing the Department of Education.

As scientists, we cannot stand by while Nye… uses his public persona…to support an administration that is expressly xenophobic, homophobic, misogynistic, racist, ableist, and anti-science… to separate science at major agencies like NASA from ... racism, bigotry, and misogyny… isn’t just dangerous, it’s foolish and self-defeating
No number of shiny new satellites can undo the racist policies that make our Dreamer colleagues live in fear…  And no new mission to the Moon can make our LGBTQ colleagues feel welcome... Nye’s TV persona has perpetuated the harmful stereotype that scientists are nerdy, combative white men in lab coats—

... he continues to wield his power recklessly… in 2017, his appearance was used to spread misinformation to Fox viewers and fundraise for anti-climate initiatives… Nye’s complicity does not align him with the researchers who have a bold and progressive vision…"

THE RED TEAM  MODELING THE POLITICAL CLIMATE OF OKLAHOMA

THE ECONOMIST  TAKES A DIM VIEW OF  PRUITT'S EPA:

"he has floated an idea for a sort of climate-focused
Scopes Monkey Trial"
"Scott Pruitt ... is the first to make a nonsense of his office ...with close ties to oil-and-gas... Mr Pruitt says he does not believe global warming  is  caused  by human  activity  and  proposes  a   " true environmentalism "  which chiefly  involves  burning  more  fossil  fuels.  Or,  as  he  puts  it,
“ using natural resources that God has blessed us with.”

As a possible probing attack, he has floated an idea for a sort of climate-focused Scopes Monkey Trial, a televised debate between climate change believers and sceptics.

Yet he is also giving contrary signals, which suggest his opposition to climate regulation may be more selective than it seemed-- ...Mr Pruitt has recently sounded perfectly respectful towards the scientific consensus on global warming.

There are three main explanations for this change.

First, the scientific consensus on global warming has hardened, making blanket opposition to it harder to maintain...a hapless effort to scrap the endangerment finding, which would invite a backlash from the next Democratic administration.

While a hard-core of ideologues and some companies... the sort of regional operator Mr Pruitt was close to in Oklahoma—argued for repeal, bigger firms, such as Chevron and ExxonMobil, were against it...This growth of new economic interests from the environmental policy regime is the second reason for the shift. Mr Pruitt’s recent interest in methane regulation exemplifies that...

The third reason for the conservative elite’s more nuanced view of environmental policy relates to public opinion—and is depressing...a deluge of bogus science and conspiracy theories... has transformed the issue from one of America’s least partisan, to one of the most... That, in turn, makes life easier for opportunists such as Mr Pruitt. Where they once risked being found out by their voters, they can now make whatever reality based compromises they like, so long as they keep enraging the other side...

By one projection, the EPA will cut its 15,000 strong staff in half by 2020. An EPA official describes this approach as “salting the Earth, not burning the place down.” That is hardly reassuring, considering the environmental vandalism Mr Pruitt is doing, and the vandalism to America’s Enlightenment traditions he represents."

                                  THE  DRY  ICE  PALACE

RealClimate often complains with cause about  efforts to denigrate the significance of CO2:
The global CO2 rise: the facts, Exxon and the favorite denial tricks
Filed under:

 — stefan @ 25 January 2018
The basic facts about the global increase of CO2 in our atmosphere are clear and established beyond reasonable doubt. Nevertheless, I’ve recently seen some of the old myths peddled by “climate skeptics” pop up again. Are the forests responsible for the CO2 increase? Or volcanoes? Or perhaps the oceans?Let’s start with a brief overview of the most important data and facts about the increase in the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere:

  1. Since the beginning of industrialization, the CO2 concentration has risen from 280 ppm (the value of the previous millennia of the Holocene) to now 405 ppm...

Several commenters observed that this works out to about a kilogram per square meter of man-made CO2 globally, raising an interesting  educational possibility: turn the  kilogram-per- square-meter meme into a public art theme.

Passers-by, including those given to parroting   playbook mantras like :
" What can  four hundredths of one per cent of  the  invisible Gas of Life  possibly do ? "
could be politely invited to step into a one square meter plexiglass telephone booth with a wet floor, to  elicit a Holy Smoke! reaction when a kilo of powdered dry ice  is sprinkled at their feet.

A major museum courtyard might host  a pyramid  of  stacked dry ice blocks containing one person's share of the anthropogenic  CO2 they add to  the air -  about 20 tonnes  of the stuff.

Infrared thermal cameras  could set up upwind and downwind of  the  two story tall pyramid, and  flat screen displays  could allow passers by to see their  thermal glow disappear  as  IR opaque plumes of CO2 waft between them  and the  thermal imaging cameras.
This would turn your share of the CO2 problem into something easy to see and mighty hard to ignore:

Climate Alarmists Gloat over the Death of Skeptic John ‘Weather Channel’ Coleman

1

Climate alarmists are gloating over the death of Weather Channel founder John Coleman, an outspoken skeptic.

Knowing Coleman, I’m sure he would have been delighted by this response from people whose good opinion he valued so little.
What he would have especially relished, I suspect, is the arrogance and pomposity and self-delusion of Peter Gleick’s claim to be on the #Science side of the argument.
That same arrogance, pomposity and self-delusion is evident in this similarly gloating obituary of Coleman in New Republic by one Emily Atkin.:
Coleman was a television meteorologist, not a climatologist; he didn’t even hold a degree in meteorology. But conservative publications began to cite him as if he were an authority on climate science...
if you’re going to dishonour the dead, at least make sure that your criticisms are defensible. Otherwise you’re liable to come across like an ungracious, ghoulish creep.

                                     THE  LAST  STRAW

CALIFORNIA  CONSIDERS  JAILING  WAITERS  WHO OFFER  UNSOLICITED STRAWS & SWIZZLE  STICKS
The Green Democratic majority leader  of  California's lower house  has introduced a  bill  to stop sit-down restaurants from offering customers straws with their beverages unless they specifically request one.

Under Calderon's law, a waiter who serves a drink with an unrequested straw in it would face up to 6 months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
"We need to create awareness around the issue of one-time use plastic straws and its detrimental effects on our landfills, waterways, and oceans," Calderon explained in a press release.
Darth Straw Cup
All Your Plastic Use Behaviors Are Belong To Us
“AB 1884 is not ban on plastic straws.  It is a small step towards curbing our reliance on these convenience products, which will hopefully contribute to a change in consumer attitudes and usage.”
...due to their small size and lack of a resin code, no straws are ever recycled. After their one-time use, non-biodegradable plastic straws often end up in our oceans and waterways where they break down into smaller, micro-size pieces that are discarded into our environment. They are oftentimes mistaken as food by marine life.
An estimated 500 million straws are used in the United States every day. This number is enough to fill over 127 school buses each day and is calculated to be about 1.6 straws per person in the U.S. ... AB 1884 is a step toward lowering these alarming figures and is a simple way for consumers to change their plastic use behavior."

STANDUP  COMEDY   IN  THE  CTHULHUCENE   PUPPY ROOM

Writing about China Miéville in The Guardian, Ursula  Le Guin opined :

“Miéville... is equally comfortable in the worlds of politics and academia. Combining his skills as a storyteller and Marxist theorist... Miéville discusses the intersections between his creative oeuvre and the political projects of utopia and dystopia."

Boston Review: You are often quoted as saying that you want to write a book in every genre. Nonetheless, many of your books have centered around themes of utopia and dystopia. Do you feel as though dystopia has finally, well-and-truly slipped the bounds of genre?

China Miéville: Dystopia and utopia are themes, optics, viruses that can infect any field or genre. Hence you find utopian, dystopian, and heterotopian aspects in stories across the board: westerns, romances, crime—let alone, more obviously, in science fiction, speculative fiction, and fantasy.

There has not in living memory been a better time to be a fascist. We live in a utopia: it just isn’t ours.

To the extent that, before anything else, texts are -topias (particularly utopias) narrowly conceived—warnings, suggestions, cookbooks, or proposals—they are mostly uninteresting to me. Still, the often-repeated slur that utopias are “dull” has never been politically innocent: it bespeaks reaction. When Emil Cioran attacks utopias for lacking the “rupture” of real life—“the totality of sleeping monsters”—

OTOH,  he may be the Greatest Living Surrealist - The Last Days Of New Paris  is a real tour de force.

FIERY METEOR  " THRUST INTO DANGEROUS LEGAL LIMBO"

Two CNN correspondents claimed during an episode of The Leadwith Jake Tapper that an asteroid could potentially threaten the Earth if the government shutdown continues.

CNN correspondent Tom Foreman recalled the time NASA could not monitor “potentially dangerous asteroids” for over two weeks, implying that NASA would not be able to prevent an asteroid attack if it hit Earth while the government shut down.
“In space, that same year, for more than two weeks, NASA reportedly stopped monitoring potentially dangerous asteroids. A big one, by the way, is expected to brush by Earth on February 4th,” Foreman noted.

Forman and CNN anchor/chief Washington correspondent Jake Tapper were discussing how federal employees foregoing paychecks and government-funded ventures affected by the government shutdown would impact the economy.
“It’s not the just government workers—if the shutdown happens. It will have a real cascading effect on the economy,” Tapper remarked.
During a government shutdown, all non-essential services, including the National Park Service and museums, cease to operate.
“Essential” operations, such as the military, the post office, and federally-run medical centers remain open—although many employees will not receive immediate payment while the government is closed.
Foreman added that if Congress does not reach a deal on a funding package and DACA amnesty negotiations, illegal aliens would be “thrust into a dangerous legal limbo.”
“If there is no deal as these negotiations stand right now, nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants who came as children, the so-called DREAMers would be thrust into a dangerous legal limbo,” he said.

BOOK REVIEW RAP BATTLE ERUPTS BETWEEN DESMOGBLOG & WEIGHT LIFTING  WUWT   WEATHERMEN  JOE BASTARDI & MICHAEL FUMENTO

"I wrote my last book, Climate Cover-Up, because I wanted to take a deeper look at the science propaganda and media echo chambers that muddied the waters around climate change, fuelled denial of facts and stalled action. The book was a Canadian best seller, was reprinted in Spanish and Mandarin and became the basis of many lectures, panel discussions and presentations I have given around the world since it was published in 2009.
I continued to be perplexed and frustrated by the spin doctoring swirling around the global warming issue, making it easy for people to refute the reality of what’s going on and ignore this critical collective problem. But as time went by I became even more concerned and alarmed by the crazy state of debate today in general — the toxic rhetoric that seems to permeate virtually all of the important issues we face, whether it’s a discussion about vaccinations, refugee immigration, gun control or environmental degradation.
I decided to write another book that would take a deep look at our resistance to change, the human relations and ingrained psychology causing it and the gridlock, inaction and despair that result. "

The Climate Chronicles – a new book by Joe Bastardi

Friend of WUWT Joe Bastardi, has been referred to as an institution in the science of weather prediction.
Over decades, many companies across a multitude of industries, from energy to retail, have profited from his forecasts.
His exceptional skills are rooted in a comprehensive understanding of global oscillations and in-depth analysis of historical weather patterns.
This contributes to his skepticism of claims that are being made as to how bad things are now, since there are so many examples as bad or worse! The book brings out many of these and much more.
A revealing look by someone who has loved the weather since his first memory–and has worked in the field for over 40 years–at what is really inside the man-made “climate change” agenda. Bastardi shows through countless examples, the exploitation, politicization, and weaponization of weather and climate in an effort to promote an agenda that runs counter to the foundations this nation was built on.

Also sounding juiced  is former Washington Times  & WUWT  reporter  Michael Fumento.
The  author  of   "The Myth of  Heterosexual AIDS"  who hints darkly that :
There have been a lot of well-kept secrets among the global warmists—which is primarily why the so-called "Climategate" stolen e-mails proved such a scandal...
But now the truth is coming out. One fact is that there has been no statistically significant warming for quite awhile...The importance of any current plateau is that during that same period we’ve belched so-called "greenhouse gases" (GHGs) into the atmosphere at rising rates...
Therefore the grossly simplistic formula of “greater GHG emissions equals greater warming”is false—
